COMING APART

This series emerged from the series I did around the processing of my father’s dementia. As his grip on reality and the image he had once projected, began to break down, it seemed to us that he was coming apart. Who emerged surprised us - a funny, affable, and unfiltered being who finally told us his real opinions! In the last few years, this has been my personal experience as my previous world came apart… The series I began painting is all about what happens when things come apart….structure and form that once were there can give way to something new…silver linings, golden nuggets…a new vision of the world. Beauty can be seen and experienced despite things coming apart.

RAIN

Vancouver has been my chosen home for more than 30 years. The RAIN series was first conceived in 2012 when I moved into a new office space. The windows of my office faced the North Shore mountains, while overlooking a relatively industrial part of Vancouver. During one particularly rainy season I was struck by the way that the rain recoloured the view from my window. Though the rain seemed monotonous and relentless , every day I saw a new colour combination revealed by the rain outside my window. Initially I began to record the colours outside my window using pastel crayons on paper, and eventually began to paint these colours on grey base canvases. Through this season of painting I began to appreciate the beauty and transformative power of rain.

Connection and Clarity/Clarity and Connection

The period beginning September 2021 through September 2023 marked one of the darkest, most difficult and painful times of my life. This series was born out of what I discovered during that bleak time as I struggled to regain equilibrium. “Connection” refers to the human connections - the team of family, friends and colleagues who supported me, stood by me and helped me to not isolate or give in to despair. But “connection” also refers to the understanding I began to come to about my own thoughts, actions and faith. “Clarity” refers to the new perspectives I gained through making connections and also to the discovery of the loyalty and encouragement.

A WALK IN TÜRKIYE

A romantic trip to Türkiye a couple of years ago birthed this series. The early evening light in many Turkish cities is unique, spectacular and uneven - one side of the sky may be light and bright while at the same time the other side may be dark and brooding. The two most enduring images for me during this time of day was the view of buildings on slopes and hill sand the way the light affected their colour and dimension, and secondly the way the moon often looked “shattered” in the evening light.

URBAN LANDSCAPES

This series emerged out the RAIN series. I began noticing that after daytime rain, especially around mid morning, the light on the dripping buildings would often cause a refracted reflection, which would make the city look as though it was a mirage. During my travels I began noting the same phenomena in other cities. I began taking notes and sketching some of the images I was seeing. When I first began painting these images, I initially tried to paint large representational sections of what I saw, but later found that painting the sections I remembered more vividly produced abstractions that captured the dimensional “landscapes” I saw in the rain.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Painting is the means through which I process many things about my life – my fears, my longings, and the myriad other issues that life demands we wrestle through. Painting offers me the freedom to move away from the endless, repetitive analyses in my head; instead, it allows me to engage my body and soul in the process of discovery and reflection.   – Anton Dolfo-Smith
